How to Define Your Target Markets

target-practice-530Every business has target markets whether they know it or not.

Some have just one.

Some have dozens. But they’re there.

Your target market is your answer to the question “who?” in your marketing. “Who is this for?”

But target market is different that “ideal client.” Ideal client means “generally who do I want to work with?” and you’ll get answers like, “People who are open minded, ready to do the work and take responsibility for their lives.” Or, “People who are going through transitions.” Or, “People who are stressed.”

That’s all fine for a general sense of who you want to work with but those answers absolutely won’t cut it as a target market.

Ideal client means broad terms like, “Conscious entrepreneurs” or “Visionary Changemakers” or “Cultural Creatives.” These terms mean something to the business owner but not much to the marketplace.

No, a target market is something much more specific.

Why figure this out?

Once you do, your marketing will get ten times easier. It’ll be easier to articulate what you do. It’ll be easier to find people. Everything gets easier.

And maybe 5% of the entrepreneurs I talk to have anything approaching a clear niche.
